Description

Learn how to make homemade bubble gum from scratch! This fun, easy recipe creates soft, chewy, flavorful bubble gum that really blows bubbles. Perfect for kids!

Ingredients

Creating homemade bubble gum requires a few specific ingredients that are key to achieving the right texture and chew. While not all are common pantry staples, they are easily sourced online.

For the Gum Base:

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) Light Corn Syrup: This is the primary sweetener and humectant that keeps the gum soft and pliable. Do not substitute with other syrups like maple or honey, as they have different properties.

  • 1/2 cup (60g) Powdered Sugar, plus 1-2 cups (120-240g) additional for kneading and coating. This creates a smooth, non-gritty texture.

  • 1/4 cup (30g) Gum Arabic Powder (also called Acacia Gum): This is the essential ingredient that provides the classic “chew” and elasticity. It is a natural gum harvested from the acacia tree and is non-negotiable for this recipe.

  • 3 tablespoons (42g) Food-Grade Gum Base: This is the modern chewy component, often made from a blend of natural latexes like chicle or synthetic food-grade polymers. It significantly improves the bubble-blowing capability and texture. You can make gum with just gum arabic, but adding gum base creates a more authentic result.

  • 1/4 teaspoon Citric Acid Powder: This provides a slight tang that balances the overwhelming sweetness and makes the flavor “pop.” Find it in the canning aisle or with brewing supplies.

  • 1/4 cup (60ml) Water

For Flavor and Color:

  • 1 1/2 – 2 teaspoons Flavoring Oil (NOT extract): This is critical. Flavoring oils (like LorAnn Oils) are highly concentrated and heat-stable, so they won’t bake out. Extracts are alcohol-based and will evaporate, leaving little flavor. Classic bubble gum, strawberry, and watermelon are popular choices.

  • 2-3 drops Food-Gaste Glycerin: This helps keep the gum soft and pliable for a longer period.

  • Liquid or Gel Food Coloring: Pink is the classic choice, but any color will work.

Instructions

Now that you have your ingredients ready, let’s dive into the steps for making this delightful Homemade Bubble Gum. It’s as easy as pie, and I promise you’ll feel like a culinary superstar!

Step 1: Prepare Your Workstation
This is a sticky process! Before you begin, lay down parchment paper or a silicone baking mat on your counter. Have your additional 1-2 cups of powdered sugar ready in a shallow bowl. Lightly grease a heatproof spatula and your hands with a neutral oil (like vegetable or coconut oil).

Step 2: Melt the Gum Base
In a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the 1/4 cup of water, 1/2 cup of light corn syrup, the gum arabic powder, and the food-grade gum base (if using). Heat over low heat, stirring constantly with your greased spatula. The mixture will be clumpy and strange at first. Continue heating and stirring for 5-8 minutes until the powders have completely dissolved and the mixture is smooth, thick, and molten. It must not boil.

Step 3: Incorporate the Sugar and Citric Acid
Once the gum base mixture is smooth, remove the saucepan from the heat. Immediately stir in the 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and the 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid powder. The mixture will become very thick and difficult to stir. This is normal.

Step 4: The Initial Cool Down
Scrape the very hot, thick mixture onto your prepared parchment paper. Allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes, just until it is cool enough to handle. It should still be very warm. Do not let it cool completely, or it will become too hard to knead.

Step 5: The Kneading Process (The Most Important Step)
Grease your hands thoroughly with oil. Begin to knead the warm gum mass as you would bread dough. It will be extremely sticky at first. Have your bowl of extra powdered sugar nearby. Gradually, a little at a time, knead in the additional powdered sugar. You may not need the full 2 cups. Continue kneading and adding sugar for 5-10 minutes until the gum is no longer sticky, is smooth and pliable, and has a Play-Doh-like consistency.

Step 6: Add Flavor and Color
Once the gum has reached the perfect texture, flatten it into a disc. Make a well in the center and add your 1.5-2 teaspoons of flavoring oil, 2-3 drops of glycerin, and your desired food coloring. Fold the gum over and begin kneading again until the color and flavor are completely and evenly distributed throughout the entire batch. Wear food-safe gloves to avoid staining your hands.

Step 7: Shape and Set
Roll the gum into a long, thin log. Using kitchen scissors or a sharp, oiled knife, cut the log into your desired piece sizes. You can also roll it flat and use small cookie cutters for fun shapes. Toss the finished pieces in a little more powdered sugar to prevent sticking. Let the gum sit, uncovered, at room temperature for at least 1-2 hours to set fully before wrapping or chewing.
