Ingredients

  • 2 cups sourdough starter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup diced apples
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Add the applesauce, diced apples, and vegetable oil to the mixture and stir until well combined.
  3. If using, fold in the walnuts.
  4. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 2 hours.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Grease a loaf pan and pour the batter into it.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

  • For a sweeter bread, you can add more sugar or use brown sugar.
