Description
Indulge in the crispy and flavorful Blooming Onion, perfect for parties and gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large onion (sweet onion, like a Vidalia)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Oil for frying
- Dipping sauce (e.g., ranch or zesty dipping sauce)
Instructions
- Start by cutting the top off the onion and peeling away the outer layers. Slice the onion into 12-16 sections, being careful not to cut through to the bottom.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Dip the onion in buttermilk, allowing it to absorb moisture before dredging it in the seasoned flour mixture.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
- Carefully lower the onion into the hot oil, frying for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
- Once done, remove the onion using a slotted spoon, draining it on paper towels.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!
Notes
Use chilled buttermilk for better texture. If freezing, wrap the onion well.
