Description

Indulge in the crispy and flavorful Blooming Onion, perfect for parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion (sweet onion, like a Vidalia)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Oil for frying
  • Dipping sauce (e.g., ranch or zesty dipping sauce)

Instructions

  1. Start by cutting the top off the onion and peeling away the outer layers. Slice the onion into 12-16 sections, being careful not to cut through to the bottom.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Dip the onion in buttermilk, allowing it to absorb moisture before dredging it in the seasoned flour mixture.
  4. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Carefully lower the onion into the hot oil, frying for 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Once done, remove the onion using a slotted spoon, draining it on paper towels.
  7. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!

Notes

Use chilled buttermilk for better texture. If freezing, wrap the onion well.
